Should We Do Lone Ghost & Spirit Vigils?
I’ve done lone vigils in my early days of ghost hunting, including my first visit to Chingle Hall (was allegedly the most haunted house in Great Britain, near Preston) after the owner went to bed at about 3am, but she was still there if I needed her in an emergency. As it happened, most of the activity on that night happened before I was left alone. I have also been to Warstone Lane Cemetery (Jewellery Quarter - Birmingham) late at night, alone (supposed to be haunted by a grey lady), the greatest risk here was getting attacked by drunken yobs or getting quizzed by the police as to what I was doing there. Free, but I wouldn’t recommend it, especially alone.
The problem with being alone is that if you experience, see, hear or sense something, it’s only your word which doesn’t stand up to scrutiny as well as if 2 people or better a group experienced it. You can still attempt to capture things on camera Etc, but only you saw the photo or video taken and this can be a disadvantage. For Example, if you capture a strange light, only you can argue that there wasn’t an external light causing a reflection. Health and safety could also be an issue, for instance, if you experienced a bad reaction, what-ever its cause (paranormal or psychological), there wouldn’t be anyone there to help you or to get help.
When I go on investigations with the scientific group, which I’m a member of, we always make sure that no-one is ever completely on there own, partly for health and safety, but also to verify anything that happens. It’s taken to the extreme a bit, even accompanying a person on the way to the toilet and waiting outside.
I know with CEPI (Central England Paranormal Investigators they always keep people in groups for health and safety, this is even more important for CEPI as they allow interested members of the general public to join them on investigations. They have a legal responsibility follow health and safety guidelines when doing an investigation, so they couldn’t allow any guests to go alone.
As far as activity goes, some people think that spirits collect energy from people, thus more can happen in groups. I’m open minded on this, one has to be careful as the more people available, the more eyes and ears Etc, less things will go unnoticed in a large group. Also the larger the group, the harder it is to eliminate noises caused by the group, E.g. a stomach rumble, breathing, someone moving subconsciously Etc. I think vigils are best in small groups of about 3 to 5 (but at least 2), but this obviously isn’t always practical.
