It's similar to when you have to pay for products or services when surfing the standard Internet, but you can browse most sites free as in the virtual worlds on Second Life. You can also pay for land, this is Second Life's version of paying for hosting on the Standard Internet and is totally optional.

Unfortunately I’ve played this on 2 modern PCs and have come across numerous bugs in the application. Maybe we are unlucky as I know Second Life has millions of happy users. Anyway, there no harm in trying out a free account.
