Open Office - Don’t Bother Paying For Microsoft Office! This Is Totally Free & You Can Optionally Get Personally Involved With Its Future Development
I'm not about to tell you to pirate Microsoft Office, although because of it's price there are more pirate copies around than legitimate copies, especially in the home.
I'm telling you to download Open Office by Sun Microsystems Inc. totally free instead, it's an excellent alternative to Microsoft Office and it's fully compatible with a massive amount of file formats including MS Office. It's extremely user friendly, very stable and well supported. Versions are available for all versions of Windows above Windows 98, Apple Macs and even Linux (E.g. Free BSD). There are other free MS Office alternatives available too, but Open Office has become very much respected over years of development and is thought of as the best freeware alternative.
For most people Open Office provides everything 99% of users are every likely to need from an Office Product and it's seems to be less resource intensive too. This is what you get included:
- Writer (Wordprocessor, similar to MS Word)
- Calc (Spreadsheet, similar to MS Excel)
- Impress (Presentation Package, similar to MS Powerpoint)
- Base (Database, similar to MS Access)
- Math (Advanced mathematics package for complex equations Etc.)
- Draw (Another Presentation Package)
The only thing that's really missing is visual basic support, although if you edit a file with visual basic in it, open office knows it's there and will give you the option of saving leaving the code present next time you save the document. Well less than 1% of users actually use visual basic in MS Office, so unless your one of them, I thoroughly recommend getting your hands on this amazing software totally free, unless of course you already have MS Office installed.
With Open Office, when they say free, they mean free, you are never asked to pay anything, ever and you immediately download the full version. There really is no catches and even registering is completely optional. Can you even start to imagine the amount of work that must have gone into developing this excellent product?

Why Not Contribute Towards The Futre Devopment Of Open Office?
I can't imagine why OpenOffice is still freeware, but if you appreciate the software, you optionally get the unique opportunity to get personally involved with it's future development by becoming a contributer. Voluntary work can include submitting various material, helping with technical support, programming and much more. They make it clear that no matter what your skills and interests are, there is a place where you can participate to improve Open Office. It's a great way of helping, improving your skills and gaining valuable experience along the way. It's totally optional and you are never pushed into anything you don't want to do. You can choose to donate financially, but they make it clear that contributing is much more valuable to them than money.

I’ve recently tried using Office 2007 and I dislike the completely new “Vista” style layout. I suppose you could get used to it, but in my opinion this change wasn’t really needed. Open Office is much easier, especially if you’re used to Windows XP or earlier as it keeps the classic style File, Edit menu Etc.
