Paid to Complete Survey Scam

6 June, 2009 (17:01) | Uncategorized | By: admin

There’s various sites across the Internet that pay you or give incentives to fill out consumer market research surveys. Some companies pay using points which can usually be exchanged for either cash or other gifts when you reach a certain amount. Some survey companies pay directly in cash while others only give you prize draw entries. What-ever incentive is offered, as long as they are up front and honest about what is offered along with a reasonable estimate about how much work is involved, it gives the person the choice of whether to participate to not.

When you are offered a paid survey, you are normally asked a few simple quick questions first to see if you are the right person for the target population for the particular survey. Now here is the scam / con in my opinion. Many companies aren’t just asking you a few simple questions first, but are asking numerous survey questions which can be quite in depth taking sometimes as long as 10-15 minutes which is often as long as the main survey is supposed to take anyway. After spending ages on a good few pages of questions, one is then told that the survey is closed because it’s reached the maximum number of occupants or you don’t match the criteria at this very late stage. The survey companies know when they have reached the maximum number of participants BEFORE you start the pre-survey, but they still waste your time doing a pre-survey for absolutely nothing. A small minority of companies still give you prize draw entries which in my personal experience I’ve never won anything, so I suspect the chances of winning are extremely low. I understand that survey suitability and criteria questions sometimes need to be asked first, but not pages of a survey questions and not when the survey is already closed.

A few years ago I’d be invited to a survey and I’d be accepted for most of them or I’d only have to answer 2 or 3 questions before I get rejected and this would only happen occasionally. When registering for a good survey company they normally ask you to do a number of pre-surveys that decide which surveys you are likely to be accepted on, yet lately this system is in my experience failing. Sometimes I can be invited to participate in a survey that isn’t suitable and it’s obvious it isn’t from my pre-surveys questions I did when signing up, yet I’ll still be invited anyway. Now I’ve noticed I’m getting rejected on most surveys after filling in a lot more pre-survey questions. This is in my opinion a scam as the survey company clearly are making money from these complex pre-survey questions and aren’t passing this onto the participants. They should definitely tell you if the survey is closed without still going through lots of the survey for nothing or they should at least pay you part of the money if you complete a good proportion of the survey.

In my opinion many pay survey companies are making people complete surveys for nothing on purpose and I believe the pre-survey questions are more often than not used and passed on for money while the person isn’t compensated for their time. I’m not saying all “get paid to complete survey” companies are doing this, but sadly from my experience this is happening much more often which is very bad news for honest people trying to make a little extra money working from home.

Toluna is as guilty as most survey sites for sometimes making you waste time filling out a fair part of a survey to be told you aren’t suitable at a late stage. Toluna however is still one of the very best paid to survey sites out there as they are far more than just a standard paid to fill out surveys site and they most definitely pay and are well established. Firstly you get loads of surveys and you also get paid for filling out initial surveys to complete your profile, but unlike most surveys sites you can earn and unlimited amount from many other activities too.
With Toluna you join part of a large on-line community where you get paid for starting polls or your own opinions on just about anything as well as answering other people’s polls and replying to other people’s opinions. Being part of Toluna can be quite addictive and enjoyable. You also sometimes get the chance to test new products.

I’m a member of Toluna too and do make a few bucks with them here and there. I know what you mean about screener questions and spending 10-15 minutes and then being disqualified, very frustrating. I like Opinion Outpost because even if you don’t qualify to complete a survey they usually compensate you with a small amount of points just for trying, so you don’t feel like your time was wasted. Here’s the link to check it out http://opinionoutpost.com/join/4528595

Thanks, bestmommy, I tried Opinion Outpost but unfortunately it’s only available for people in the USA or Canada, NOT in the UK. Never mind, if you live in the USA or Canada, you might want to give it a try (PS: I’ve kept bestmommy’s affiliate link – please don’t remove it as it won’t affect your earnings in any way what-so-ever).

I installed an awful plugin today from Toluna which was in fact 2 plugins, not 1 as advertised. I then still got told I didn’t match the criteria AFTER installing the ‘naff’ software. They seem to be getting worse and are at present extremely late paying out too although they promise my voucher by the end of this month which I ordered ages ago on the 17th June!

Just went to fill in a Lightspeed panel survey about ice cream that was supposed to reward 150 points (worth approx £1.50) for 35 minutes work. I completed numerous questions, many very in depth and many very long, some with 20+ boxes to fill in. I certainly assumed that after 15-20 minutes I was actually accepted for the survey. I was wrong, to my shock and dismay it suddenly said that I didn’t meet the target group. I’ve written a complaint to Lightspeed as I’ve literally spend half the amount of time it said for nothing except a few prize entry draw that you never win anyway, so it is literally nothing. With such long in depth time consuming questions, it’s obvious they’re using the information and are paid for it, so it’s a scam we aren’t paid after spending so long.

Lightspeed have been quite bad sometimes for asking too many questions to get told your not in the target group on a survey, but this was absolutely ridiculous and it’s the most questions I’ve ever been asked for nothing on any survey, in fact some paid surveys are about this length. Apart from this Lightspeed still remains one of the better paid to survey providers.
