Introducing Recuva:

If while using your PC you delete a file or files by accident, there’s various software products out there that can attempt file recovery (to undelete). The problem is that not many applications are totally free and do the job as well as Recuva by Piriform Software. This 100% no catch freeware application is fully compatible with Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 for both 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.

As you may or may not know, when a file is deleted the file itself isn’t actually removed from your hard disk, instead the space where the file existed is simply marked as available for reuse. Because of this, it’s important to avoid writing to your hard disk as much as possible after any accidental deletion to have the maximum chance of recovering any deleted files as otherwise they could be overwritten by new information. Because when you download Recuva and install it, you’re writing to your hard disk, I strongly recommend that you install Recuva immediately, preferably before you accidentally delete any files so the application will already be installed just in case you need it in future. If this isn’t possible, try to install to another hard drive or even a flash drive if there’s one available, otherwise you’re unfortunately going to have to take the risk of overwriting your deleted file or files by installing the application. Note that Recuva can also recover deleted files from other drives like flash drives or floppy drives which are not obviously affected when installing Recuva to your hard drive.

Recuva is very easy to use and will quickly search for all deleted files and directories giving you the option to restore any that are still intact. This software and all other software by Piriform Software are always totally free and there’s never any nag screens or catches. You have the option to install the Yahoo Toolbar, but you can simply untick it during installation.
